Senses – Day 14

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” ~Cynthia Ozick

This quote speaks to me today.  And what stands out to me today are my SENSES.

The sense of sight.  My eyes.  Gosh, I actually don’t take them for granted as much as I used to now that I’ve seen (literally and figuratively) Philip struggle with sight issues.  Thank God for an awesome retina specialist who has treated him wonderfully to help preserve his sight.   I am grateful each day to be able to see my beautiful boys, my husband, the wonder of our Earth and all the colors of our life.

Lucian and Bird

The sense of hearing.   The voices of loved ones.  Music.  The whistling wind and pitter-patter of raindrops.

The sense of smell.  A clean baby.  Fresh flowers.  Aromatic baking.    Chocolate — ahhh, that is a pleasant smell, too.

The sense of touch.   The keyboard under my fingertips as I bring words to life.  The comfort of my husband’s hand.  Hugs.

Brotherly Love

The sense of taste.  Sweetness of fresh fruits.  Salty, spicy, bitter, sour… just to tell the difference as you take a bite of something tasty. Did I mention chocolate?!  Chocolate

As I sit here listening to my boys boisterously playing Wii.  I realize how much we take for granted our senses.

Stop and think how much we rely on our five senses each and every day throughout our day and yet… we take them for granted.  Here’s a little challenge —  for 24 hours — think of how much you cherish (or at least appreciate) your senses.  Get in the shower — ahhh new shampoo or the familiar smell of the soap you always buy.  Get dressed and feel the texture of your clothes.  Grab a bite to eat or your morning coffee and really savor the taste.  Cherish the sound of silence or the hustle and bustle of children getting ready for the day.  And that is just in the first hour of your day.  See how much you REALLY are grateful for your senses.  Then, if you’re really motivated, come back and comment on my blog and tell me what stood out to you the most (yikes, the teacher in me is coming out giving my blog readers an assignment and all).

Until tomorrow…
