Teaching Independence – Day 131

 Teaching Independence – Day 131

By Renee Bodkin

Today Ben left for his first campout with Troop 630 as a Boy Scout.  He’s been preparing for this, we’ve been preparing for this.  He’s been a Cub Scout for 5 years.  He’s camped before – both with Cub Scouts and family.  Though today is different.                Today Benjamin took another step towards independence.

I am grateful that I am given the opportunity to teach independence to my boys.

Ben was given a packing list and his backpack and he prepared his whole pack for the weekend on his own (or at least without parental involvement).  I am so proud of him.  He was all ready!  And he was confident and proud of what he did!  These are one of those  “teachable moments” that I feel will catapult him in the right direction.    Homeschooling and scouts give us the opportunity to teach independence on a level that most children just don’t get in school.

Until tomorrow…
