Literacy – Day 143

Literacy – Day 143

By Renee Bodkin

“I will not take these things for granted.”  Remember that song from Toad the Wet Sprocket?  Hmm… pensive.

Literacy.  Reading.  Books.

This is such a serious subject for me.   I teach special education to high school students.  They are kids who really, really have the potential to live on their own and get jobs when they “grow up”.  But… many of them can barely read.  It’s agonizing for me.  I do what I can to help them.  Find interesting books and articles and reading passages at their interest level as well as their reading level to foster an appreciation of the written word.   I often say, “The more you read the better a reader you are.”

I am grateful for the ability to read.  I am grateful for the ability to facilitate reading at home and at school.  I am grateful that my boys are readers.  They are like sponges soaking up the written word and the information those secret words hold!

Until tomorrow…
