Niagara Falls – Day 54

Niagara Falls – Day 54

By Renée Bodkin

Today was an exciting day for Niagara Falls.  The International Business Times (ibtimes.com) website posted an article entitled “20 Places Every American Should Visit” and Niagara Falls was on that list!!  Not only was Niagara Falls on the list but Niagara Falls ranked #1!  This is exciting for our amazing wonder of the world.

The FallsToo often Niagara Falls gets bad publicity because the city is run down and an eye sore for tourists.   Unfortunately, we can only do so much.  I know plenty of business owners who believe in this city and invest in this city but it’s going to take even more than that to “fix” this city.  But what moved me and made me realize my gratitude for this city was when I was reading comments on Facebook (Buffalo News and some local tv stations) so many people had to be negative about the city.  And honestly it made me mad.  Seriously,  is any tourist city perfect?  Not likely.  Residents and business owners and even the politicians aren’t naive to this issue.  But the point is that we have this amazing wonder of the world to be proud of!

In addition to seeing NIAGARA FALLS  there are plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls. New York.  Yes, we also know that across the border is hopping with commercialism and tourist attractions.  But we tend to not highlight the amazing NY State Parks that surround the falls.  We have Whirlpool State Park, Devil’s Hole State Park and Deveaux State Park all in Niagara Falls.  And they are all special in their own right.  Deveaux Woods State Park is a small park but it is also home to the Oldest Old Growth Forest in America.  Trees and plants and a short hiking trail with birds and nature to take in.  Along the Niagara River is the Niagara Gorge Trail running from Whirlpool State Park down to Devil’s Hole State Park.  Talk about an amazing hike along the upper rim of the gorge then if you’re up to a good hike down into the gorge where you come so close to the water you could touch it.  Don’t.  People die every year because they underestimate the power of the water.  But again, what amazing nature experiences we have — FOR FREE — in our Niagara Falls.  Also part of Niagara Falls State Park is Goat Island and Three Sisters Island… super pretty and awesome view of the Falls and the Niagara River and the rapids!

Upper Gorge

People complained that right at the Falls prices were high for water bottles and souvenirs but really… isn’t that to be expected.  Come prepared with a backpack with snacks and water and stop complaining.  Or, if you aren’t interested in paying higher prices at the restaurants directly AT the Falls, do a bit of research and drive into the city for some great local restaurants or some chains that would suit most anyone’s palate.

3 Sisters Island

One last thing, don’t forget the Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, and the Trolley.  Lots of fun and awesome experiences!

Cave of the Winds

My point is this… I am grateful for Niagara Falls.  It’s not perfect but it’s still amazing!  Hope you enjoy my pictures from the Cave of the Winds, hiking along the Niagara Gorge, 3 Sisters Island and a picture of when they were preparing the Falls for Nick Wallenda’s “famous” tightrope walk across Niagara Falls!

Until tomorrow…
